Presiding Officers are elected at the State Conference to serve the following year. These officers will serve on the YAG Planning Committee after their election, providing leadership and direction for the next State Conference. Governor
The Governor serves as the official student representative of Missouri YMCA Youth and Government for both the state and the nation. The Governor needs to be prepared to represent the YMCA and speak about YAG to other individuals or groups.
Lieutenant Governor
The Lieutenant Governor provides leadership to the Legislative Program and presides over the Senate at the State Conference.
Secretary of State
The Secretary of State coordinates and administers the elections for Presiding Officers during the State Conference. The Secretary of State also assists with the check-in process at the State Conference as delegations arrive at the hotel.
Attorney General
The Attorney General serves as a Presiding Officer within the Judicial Program, providing mentorship and guidance to the student participants. One major responsibility for the Attorney General is to participate in the Attorney General Trial at the beginning of the State Conference, which sets an example for other judicial students to follow during their trials. The Attorney General may also provide opinions regarding current legislation, if asked.
Speaker of the House
The Speaker of the House provides leadership to the Legislative Program and presides over the House at the State Conference.
Chief Justice
The Chief Justice provides leadership to the Judicial Program and serves as the presiding judge. The Chief Justice assists in the management of trials, judges, and other proceedings.
Media Director
The Media Director provides leadership and direction to the Media Program, overseeing the news content distributed through the various media at the State Conference.
Staff to Presiding Officers
These positions are determined by the Presiding Officer, and designed to match their needs as an officer. Even though it may be listed, a position may be left unfilled if the Presiding Officer decides it is not needed for their State Conference.
- Governor’s Staff: The Governor will usually appoint a staff to support them during their term of office. These positions are traditionally a Chief of Staff, Legislative Liaison, and Communications Director. However, the Governor may choose to appoint different positions based on their needs. The staff is usually two to four students. The Governor usually identifies these students and asks them directly about serving on their staff.
- Other Positions: The Secretary of State and Attorney General may appoint an assistant to support them during the State Conference. These positions are often behind the scenes. The Presiding Officers usually identify a student to serve in these roles and asks them directly.
