National Judicial Competition

NJC Conference dates for 2016 will be: Aug 2-5. Check back soon for updates and information on 2016 case topics.

Missouri Registration deadline will be in late March 2016. This will give our teams plenty of time to prepare. In 2016, Missouri YIG is planning to bring 3 Appellate teams (2 people each) and 3 Mock Trial teams (8 people each) for a total delegation of 30 students.

The Missouri fee will be $625 and will include: Transportation via Deluxe Motor Coach from Jefferson City to Chicago, all program materials, three nights at the competition hotel, dinner on Thursday night, breakfast on Friday morning, and the return bus trip. We will depart Jefferson City Tuesday at 8am and will return Friday at 6pm.

ENGAGE, ACT, ADVOCATE
NJC brings together Youth and Government participants from around the country to face off in mock trial and appellate court competitions. The event is a partnership between the American Bar Association and YMCA of the USA.

MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION
Team Composition
Teams of 8 participants compete as attorneys and witnesses for both sides of a trial court case. Participants are judged on their individual performance as the team participates in several trials over two days.

Mock trial teams consist of 8 participants with the following roles:

2 attorneys for Defendant
2 attorneys for Prosecution
3 witnesses for Defendant
3 witnesses for Prosecution
1 court bailiff – each team is required to have an advisor or student available to serve as bailiff
Teams must prepare both sides of the case to argue.

APPELLATE COMPETITION
Team Composition
Appellate teams consist of two participants and must prepare both sides of the case to argue. Teams must also be prepared to hear the case as a justice and be ready to engage in questioning of the attorneys during oral arguments. Teams of three are allowed but discouraged as the schedule can not guarantee equal time for each team member.
